How Do I Get Rid Of Back Acne Scars?

Sephora

Although you may not walk around holding a mirror and looking at your back, it is disheartening not to be able to wear the dress you really like or even a singlet top because of unsightly back acne scars on your back.

I use to have these scars on my back. Most of them are gone now or have lightened a little, but it certainly was not easy having acne not only on my face but also on my back. How I hated it.

The acne wasn’t from my diet or being unclean or anything like that. It was a problem I inherited from my father. He had pink scars and pitted skin where acne cysts had developed up on his back and wreaked havoc with his skin ever since he was a teenager. Unfortunately my plight was very much the same.

Other Causes of Back Acne Scars

If you have back acne, it is not always a result of being passed down through the family. If you find you perspire quite a lot, it is important to be sure that your skin is clean. Clogged pores, no matter where they are on the body, will still result in acne or pimples if the skin is not kept clean. If you use a creams on your back, even sunscreen when you are out in the sun, it is important to clean this off thoroughly when you return. Most of the sunscreens I have used, where the SUV rating is over 10 mean that the creams have a heavy or thick base. This base, if not cleaned off thoroughly, can clog pores and will not help clear back acne. If the skin cannot breathe easily, it will let you know relatively quickly by some form of breakout.

The same thing goes if you know you have an oily skin type on your back. Remove the oil at the end of the day with a gentle cloth and cleanser, preferably not soap or oil based.

Diet is a factor when it comes to keeping your skin nice and healthy. If your nutritional intake is based on fast takeaway foods and soft drink, the high fat and sugar content and limited beneficial nutrients will reduce the body’s ability to function at optimum levels. This means eventually, your skin will show the results of a poor diet.

Home Remedies for Back Acne Scars

I did try a few back acne home remedies to remove, or at least, lighten my back scars with my first experiments using apple cider vinegar and then fresh pineapple. In both cases, the liquid (or juice) is placed on a cotton ball and dabbed on the back acne scars. Although it felt nice and cooling at the time, it did not change my acne scars or lighten them.

The Mysteries of Fenugreek

I then did some research on natural food products and stumbled upon the benefits of fenugreek.

I bought 5 fenugreek leaves from a fresh food market. When home, I added 1 tablespoon of lemon to a bowl and grinded the leaves and lemon into a thin paste. I applied this mixture (made fresh daily) to my back acne scars every day for 3 weeks. Some people recommend you clean the past off after 30-40 minutes. Instead I applied the paste to my back and covered it with a light towel and slept with the paste on. I just thought it would be more effective if I left it on for longer. Every 5 days I would take a photo of my back, and to this day, a lot of my acne scars remain lighter. I am sure part of it is due to the fenugreek.

Who Knew Baking Powder Was So Effective?

Fast forward 3 months later, although I was happy with the results from fenugreek, I had read a lot about the benefits of baking powder as an acne scar remedy and wanted to give it a try. I wanted to see if I could lighten my scars further with summer being a few months away at the time.

My mother and her mother use to use baking powder for cleaning nearly everything in the house. Every stain in any cup, pot, pan, crockery dish, and glass and clothing items was met with baking powder and 9 times out of 10, the baking powder would win the fight. Now, using this product is quite different on skin. Therefor I used a lot less and did not leave it on my acne scars for long. I followed this recipe online, detailed below:

1 x heaped tablespoon into a cup

Add 3 large tablespoons of warm water to the cup

Mix it into a paste and add another teaspoon of baking powder to make the texture slightly thick.

Put the paste onto a face washer and first apply to the acne scarred area. Leave in place for 1-2 minutes.

Then using a circular motion, lightly exfoliate the site.

Be very gentle with this motion as acne scarring can be at the site where skin is very thin and any abrasive scrubbing will cause more harm than good to your skin. I applied the baking powder paste to my acne scarring every second day for 2 weeks, mostly in the morning because it is a quick ritual. After 2 weeks, from what I could see in the photos of my back scars, was that my back acne scarring was slightly lighter. There was less pink and my skin appeared to be more even.

Was It The Combination That Worked?

I don’t know if using the combination of fenugreek for a period of time, then followed by baking powder at a later date had anything to do with my acne scars lightening, but, I can tell you, I am happy with the results.

I still have a few light and small scars on my back, but when I think about where I started from to now, they are significantly less obvious. I feel more confident and now I can go swimming and wear a backless dress.

Professional Advice

Note when it comes to any sort of acne scarring remedy, whether it be a home remedy or a traditional dermatologist treatment, it is a good idea to get professional advice. Be sure to stop what you are doing or taking if you are feeling any discomfort or if you are not pleased with the results.

I think one of the most important things to remember is that there will always be a solution, it may not solve the entire problem when it comes to acne scarring but, it will make a difference. If in doubt where to start, be sure to eat well, exercise and get a good night’s sleep for the majority of your week.

It is important to support your skin with a good skin regime or routine to give your skin the best chance of healing face and back acne scars.
